Ex Customs DG

The Former Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Ahmed Aliyu Mustapha, has died.

His death was confirmed on Thursday, August 28, 2025, by Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri through a statement on his social media pages.

Governor Fintiri described the late Mustapha as “a man of service, dignity, and duty” whose legacy would live on. He also extended condolences to the Lamido of Adamawa, Muhammadu Barkindo Aliyu Mustapha, the Musdafa royal family, and all who mourn his loss.

Career in the Nigeria Customs Service

Ahmed Aliyu Mustapha began his career as a young cadet in the Nigeria Customs Service. Over the years, he steadily rose through the ranks until his appointment as Comptroller-General of Customs in 1999, at the dawn of the Fourth Republic.

During his tenure, he prioritized anti-smuggling operations. Moreover, he played a vital role in several national task forces aimed at fighting economic sabotage. As a result, his leadership strengthened enforcement strategies and enhanced Nigeria’s trade and border management.

In addition, Mustapha received the Ministerial Award for Outstanding Performance in 1988, a recognition of his remarkable service.

Retirement and Traditional Influence

After more than three decades of active duty, Mustapha retired in December 2003. However, his influence did not end with retirement. He remained an elder statesman, offering guidance within the Customs community and beyond.

He also held the revered traditional title of Sardauna Adamawa. Furthermore, as the elder brother of the Lamido of Adamawa, his counsel carried great weight within the emirate. Therefore, he remained widely respected until his passing.

Legacy of Service

Ahmed Aliyu Mustapha will be remembered as a patriotic Nigerian who dedicated his life to public service. From his fight against smuggling to his role as a traditional leader, his contributions left a lasting impact on both the Customs Service and Adamawa State.
