A senior Russian military official was killed Monday morning after an explosive device detonated beneath his vehicle.

Local authorities are investigating the incident as a targeted assassination, with early suspicions pointing toward foreign intelligence involvement.

The explosion occurred around 7:00 AM in a parking area located in southern Moscow.

Investigation Into the Death of Lt. Gen. Sarvarov

Svetlana Petrenko, a spokesperson for Russia’s Investigative Committee, confirmed that a criminal case has been launched following the blast. The victim has been identified as Lt. Gen. Fanil Sarvarov, who served as the head of the Operational Training Directorate of the Russian Armed Forces’ General Staff.

Background of the Official: According to the Russian Defence Ministry, Sarvarov was a veteran officer with a long history of service. His career included:

  • Chechnya: Active service during the conflict in the region.
  • Syria: Participation in Moscow’s extensive military operations in the Middle East.

Potential Link to Ukrainian Intelligence

Investigators are currently exploring several theories regarding the motive and execution of the attack. A primary focus of the inquiry is whether the assassination was planned by external forces.

“Investigators are pursuing numerous lines of enquiry regarding the murder. One of these is that the crime was orchestrated by Ukrainian intelligence services,” Petrenko stated on Monday.

This incident follows a pattern of similar attacks against high-profile military figures within Russia. While the Kremlin has frequently blamed Ukraine for such bombings, this particular strike represents a significant breach of security involving a member of the General Staff.

A Rising Trend of Targeted Attacks

This is not the first time a senior Russian officer has been targeted in this manner. The security situation in the capital has been under scrutiny due to several recent incidents:

  • December 2024: Ukraine claimed responsibility for a similar operation targeting a high-ranking soldier.
  • April 2025: Another top military official was killed by a car bomb outside his Moscow apartment.

The Kremlin continues to allege that Ukraine is behind a broader campaign of bombings and sabotage across Russian territory, though Ukrainian officials do not always officially confirm involvement in every specific event.
