CRASH

A deadly chain-reaction crash claimed eight lives early Thursday on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near Kara Bridge, outbound Lagos. Several others were injured in the chaos of flames, wreckage, and spilled cargo that paralyzed traffic for hours.

Eyewitnesses saw trucks collide violently. One container trailer burst into flames. Another spilled biscuit cartons across lanes. A fourth truck smashed through barriers and plunged into the Kara River.

What Caused the Crash?

Traffic officials confirmed five heavy vehicles were involved. Two caught fire. One fell into the river. A biscuit truck scattered its load.

Emergency teams reported eight deaths on-site. Recovery efforts continue. Traffic remains jammed along the Ogunnusi section.

Victims include a police inspector, a driver’s assistant, and two others. One motorboy and another person were injured and hospitalized.

Brake Failure Blamed – Police Respond

Lagos Police Commissioner Olorundare Jimoh confirmed the incident. He said early signs point to brake failure.

“We lost a police inspector. The crash is under full investigation,” he told reporters. “Anyone responsible will face prosecution.”

Three injured victims were rushed to hospital. FRSC officers managed traffic and supported rescue operations.

Another Crash Just One Day Earlier

This tragedy follows a similar wreck on Otedola Bridge inward Berger-Ojodu. A wheat-loaded Scania truck collided with a mini-truck carrying Gala sausage rolls after drivers fought for lane space.

Back-to-back crashes highlight urgent road safety risks on Lagos highways.
