The M23 rebel movement has announced its decision to withdraw forces from Uvira. This city is a key strategic hub in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The move follows a direct diplomatic intervention by the United States. In a statement released on Wednesday, the group confirmed it accepted a request made by American mediators just 24 hours earlier.
This withdrawal marks a potential de-escalation in the volatile standoff that has gripped the region for over a year.
Diplomatic Breakthrough
The conflict between the M23 and the Congolese military has been brutal. It has resulted in significant casualties and the displacement of hundreds of thousands of civilians.
The situation remains complex despite a high-profile peace agreement. Leaders of the DRC and Rwanda—which faces accusations of supporting the insurgency—signed this US-brokered deal in Washington on December 4.
However, the M23 leadership was excluded from those negotiations. Consequently, in a show of defiance shortly after the accord was signed, rebel forces advanced. They seized Uvira, which holds immense strategic value due to its proximity to the borders of both Burundi and Rwanda.
“For the Sake of Peace”
Despite their recent gains, the rebels appear to be pivoting. The group stated that its departure from the city is being conducted “for the sake of peace.”
Observers on the ground have confirmed that M23 troops began vacating the area voluntarily following the announcement. The withdrawal operation is expected to be fully completed by Thursday.
