General Assimi Goita, the military ruler of Mali, recently led a landmark ceremony in Bamako. During the event, he officially launched a unified military force for the Sahel Alliance. This move marks a significant effort by Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger to deepen their regional cooperation.
The primary mission of this new force is to stabilize the area. Currently, all three nations face a persistent and challenging Islamist insurgency. Consequently, this joint army aims to provide a stronger, more united front against these threats.
Key Details of the Joint Command
The newly established force is built for rapid and coordinated action. Because of the urgent security situation, the command structure is already in place.
Below are the core components of the new military body:
- Total Strength: The force consists of 5,000 troops ready for joint operations.
- Leadership: Burkinabe General Daouda Traoré will serve as the top commander.
- Operations Base: The force will maintain its main headquarters in Niamey, the capital of Niger.
Defense ministers and international ambassadors attended the ceremony. Their presence highlights the global interest in this shift in West African security.
Moving Toward Independence from ECOWAS
The formation of this alliance follows a major political shift in the region. Specifically, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger withdrew from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
Alliance leaders have accused ECOWAS of failing to protect the interests of local citizens. Furthermore, they criticized the bloc for imposing “inhumane” sanctions following recent military coups. By forming this unified force, the Sahel Alliance aims to manage its own security independently.
Therefore, this new military body will “intervene together” against any threats to their sovereignty. This self-reliant approach marks a new chapter for the three neighboring states.
