Tinubu and Buhari

Nigeria is in mourning following the sudden announcement of the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu confirmed the passing in a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, noting that Buhari died in London at approximately 4:30 pm on Sunday, July 13, 2025, after a prolonged illness.

Buhari, who served as military Head of State from January 1984 to August 1985 and later as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023, left a significant mark on the nation’s history.

Official Response and Arrangements

In a swift move, President Tinubu has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to the United Kingdom immediately to escort Buhari’s remains back to Nigeria.

Tinubu also spoke with Mrs. Aishat Buhari, the late president’s widow, to offer his heartfelt condolences.

As a tribute, national flags across the country will be flown at half-mast, reflecting the nation’s respect for the departed leader.

Legacy and Health Struggles

Buhari’s tenure included his historic 2015 election victory, the first time an incumbent was defeated in Nigeria’s democratic history, and efforts to combat corruption and stabilize the economy.

His health challenges, often addressed through medical visits to the UK, became a notable aspect of his later years, culminating in his passing after leaving office in 2023.

The nation awaits further details on funeral arrangements, expected to follow Islamic rites.

Buhari’s death marks the end of a significant political era, prompting reflection on his legacy amid varied public sentiments.
