The Federal Government of Nigeria signed an Exchange of Notes (E/N) agreement with the People’s Republic of China. The deal provides a $1 million grant to support flood relief efforts in Northern Nigeria.
The signing took place in Abuja, with the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning describing the grant as a timely lifeline for flood-hit communities.
Transparency and Accountability Measures
The Minister explained that Nigeria will manage the funds with strict transparency. Relevant ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) will oversee the process.
Nigeria and the Chinese Embassy will jointly monitor the spending to ensure accountability and measurable results. The Minister noted that the support strengthens current relief efforts and helps recovery programs move forward.
Strengthening Nigeria-China Partnership
China’s Ambassador to Nigeria, You Dunhai, reaffirmed his country’s solidarity with Nigeria. He stressed that China understands the struggles caused by floods, as it faces similar challenges at home.
The Ambassador, who marked his one-year anniversary in Nigeria, highlighted recent gains in bilateral relations. He pointed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s September 2024 state visit to China as a milestone in cooperation.
Broader Economic Cooperation
Ambassador You also spoke about expanding collaboration in trade, infrastructure, agriculture, technology, and culture.
He mentioned President Xi Jinping’s June 2025 policy, which grants zero-tariff access to all African exports, including Nigeria’s. This move aims to drive economic growth and create new jobs across the continent.
Shared Commitment to Development
Offering condolences to flood victims, Ambassador You said China stands with Nigeria in solidarity.
“China-Nigeria relations rest on mutual respect, equality, and shared development goals,” he stated, confirming Beijing’s long-term commitment to the partnership.
