President Bola Tinubu has officially declared an emergency concerning the training infrastructure utilized by Nigeria’s internal security agencies.
Citing serious concerns over the outdated condition of these facilities, the President highlighted the urgent need for modernization across the board for groups like the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
This significant announcement was conveyed by Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah. Mbah currently chairs the National Economic Council (NEC) ad-hoc Committee on the Overhaul of Security Training Institutions.
President’s Directive and Inspection
Governor Mbah delivered the news during an on-the-spot inspection of facilities in Lagos. He was joined by Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, the Committee Secretary (former Inspector-General of Police Alkali Usman Baba), and Assistant Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu of the Special Protection Unit (SPU).
Mbah reported that President Tinubu expressed deep concern over the continued use of old facilities. These resources are used to train security personnel who are expected to uphold human dignity during their duties.
The President issued the directive during the most recent NEC meeting on October 23. He explicitly stated that the current state of security training institutions “does not align with his vision of growing the economy to one trillion dollars in the next five years.” The President emphasized the immediate need to modernize these institutions to ensure they meet global standards.
The Road Ahead: 30-Day Deadline
The NEC ad-hoc Committee, led by Governor Mbah, has been given a short window to act. The committee must submit a comprehensive report detailing its findings and recommendations to the NEC within 30 days. This report is necessary before further government action can be taken.
