Ethiopia Declares Unilateral Ceasefire Amid Rising Calls for Peace in Tigray Conflict

July 22, 2022

3 minutes read

The Ethiopian government announced a unilateral ceasefire in the northern Tigray region today in response to growing calls for peace amid the ongoing Tigray conflict. The move follows months of international pressure and humanitarian appeals for de-escalation, with hopes that the ceasefire will provide a window for critical humanitarian aid access and a pathway to negotiated peace.

The Ethiopian government’s decision aims to reduce hostilities and improve conditions in the Tigray region, where severe humanitarian crises and infrastructure challenges have escalated. Officials from the federal government in Addis Ababa stated that the ceasefire intends to allow aid organizations to access affected areas and address urgent food and medical shortages.

Background and Current Status of the Tigray Conflict

Since November 2020, Ethiopia’s northern region of Tigray has been the center of a brutal conflict between the Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF) and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF). Fighting has resulted in widespread displacement, economic challenges, and a sharp deterioration in living conditions for civilians in Tigray and surrounding areas.

The conflict has drawn significant international attention, with both the African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN) urging parties to seek a peaceful resolution. Humanitarian organizations have reported high levels of food insecurity and lack of medical supplies in Tigray, which the ceasefire is expected to address if enforced successfully.

International Response and Next Steps

Global leaders have reacted cautiously to Ethiopia’s ceasefire announcement, with the African Union urging both parties to uphold the ceasefire and create conditions favorable for peace talks. The UN Secretary-General has expressed hope that this ceasefire could serve as a step toward a broader peace agreement, enabling aid delivery to Tigray’s vulnerable populations.

Meanwhile, the Ethiopian government has encouraged the TPLF to reciprocate by halting hostilities. Government officials emphasized that this ceasefire reflects a commitment to peace and stability in the region. The TPLF has yet to respond officially to the Ethiopian government’s ceasefire announcement, leaving uncertainty about the ceasefire’s immediate effectiveness.

Humanitarian Focus and Public Appeal

Humanitarian agencies, including the World Food Programme (WFP) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), have indicated that they are preparing to mobilize resources to Tigray, pending clearance from Ethiopian authorities. Aid agencies hope that the ceasefire will facilitate safe passage for supplies and personnel, allowing them to address pressing needs.

The situation remains fluid, and citizens and aid organizations are advised to follow updates from the Ethiopian government and relevant international agencies as peace efforts unfold.
