Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara Announces Retirement from Politics

In a major development in Ivory Coast’s political landscape, President Alassane Ouattara has officially announced his retirement from active politics. Speaking at a press conference today, September 15, 2022, in Abidjan, the 80-year-old leader revealed that he will not be seeking re-election in the country’s next presidential election, scheduled for 2025. Ouattara, who has been in power since 2011, said the decision marks the end of his political career and a step toward ensuring a peaceful transition of power in the West African nation.

During his address, Ouattara expressed his desire to “pass the torch” to a new generation of leaders, highlighting the need for continued stability and economic progress in Ivory Coast. He emphasized that his government has laid the foundation for sustainable growth and development and that it is time for younger politicians to take up the mantle of leadership.

Ouattara’s announcement comes as a surprise to many, particularly given that he was elected to a controversial third term in 2020, following a constitutional amendment. His decision to run again at that time had sparked protests and political unrest, with opposition leaders accusing him of undermining democratic norms. However, today’s announcement signals a departure from that chapter, with Ouattara now advocating for national unity and democratic consolidation.

The president also confirmed that his party, the Rally of Houphouëtists for Democracy and Peace (RHDP), will nominate a candidate to contest in the upcoming election. He pledged his full support to the party’s choice and reiterated his commitment to ensuring a smooth handover of power.

The reaction to Ouattara’s retirement announcement has been mixed. Some political figures have welcomed the decision, viewing it as an opportunity for Ivory Coast to strengthen its democratic institutions. Opposition leaders, including former President Laurent Gbagbo, have called for a truly open and transparent electoral process moving forward.

The international community has also responded to the news, with various regional organizations, including ECOWAS and the African Union, commending Ouattara for his service and for promoting political stability in the region.

As Ivory Coast prepares for its next phase of leadership, all eyes will be on the upcoming presidential election and the political dynamics that will shape the country’s future.
