Liberia Seeks Mali’s Backing for UN Security Council Seat

Liberia has intensified its diplomatic efforts to secure a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), with Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti leading a high-level delegation to Mali.

During the March 13, 2025, meeting in Bamako, Minister Nyanti engaged Mali’s interim President, General Assimi Goita, seeking his government’s support for Liberia’s candidacy.

Liberia’s Commitment to Africa’s Interests

Foreign Minister Nyanti, conveying a message from President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., reaffirmed Liberia’s dedication to Africa’s peace, security, and sustainable development.

She stated:

“Liberia’s bid for the United Nations Security Council is rooted in our unwavering commitment to advancing Africa’s priorities — promoting peace, security, and sustainable development across the continent.”

Minister Nyanti stressed that Liberia’s experience in peacebuilding, regional diplomacy, and post-conflict recovery uniquely positions it to contribute meaningfully to the Security Council.

Strengthening Liberia-Mali Relations

The discussions also highlighted the deep cultural, geographical, and historical ties between Liberia and Mali, reinforcing their shared commitment to African unity.

Foreign Minister Nyanti expressed appreciation for Mali’s warm reception, expressing optimism that Mali would stand with Liberia in this strategic diplomatic push.

With Liberia seeking broad support across Africa, this visit marks a crucial step in its ongoing campaign to secure a seat at the UN Security Council and amplify Africa’s voice on global issues.
