Ruto Appoints New IEBC Leadership Amid Electoral Tensions

Kenya’s President William Ruto has approved a new chairperson and six commissioners to lead the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), as detailed in a legal notice released late Thursday, July 10, 2025.

This decision addresses key roles in a nation with a history of disputed elections, with the next general election scheduled for 2027.

However, Ruto faces growing pressure from youth-led street protests over rising living costs, corruption, and police brutality.

New Leadership and Ceremony

The newly appointed officials, selected via an interview panel and endorsed by Ruto, will serve a four-year term.

They are scheduled to be sworn in today, Friday, July 11, 2025, following a leadership vacuum since 2023, when the terms of the previous chairman and two remaining commissioners ended.

Historical Context

The IEBC has been in limbo since Ruto suspended four commissioners in December 2022 after they challenged his election victory earlier that year.

The Supreme Court upheld his win, dismissing claims of unclear vote counting.

The recent appointments come after legal petitions, resolved by a high court dismissal on Thursday, had stalled the process.

Current Challenges

With the 2027 election approaching, the new leadership must restore confidence in the electoral system amid ongoing public discontent.

The swift resolution of legal obstacles reflects an effort to stabilize the commission, though skepticism lingers due to past electoral controversies.
