Sexual Harassment

A political storm has erupted in Nigeria’s Senate as Senator Natasha Akpoti has accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of sexual harassment and political victimization. The senator claims that Akpabio is punishing her for rejecting his alleged advances, a charge the Senate President has firmly denied, calling it a smear campaign against his leadership.

Akpoti’s Allegations Against Akpabio

Senator Natasha Akpoti, representing Kogi Central, publicly alleged that Akpabio has been subjecting her to political victimization due to her refusal to accept his purported sexual advances. According to her, she has been facing intimidation, threats, and exclusion from key Senate activities as a result of her stance.

In a statement, she claimed, “I am being punished for refusing to sleep with Senate President Akpabio. This is not just about me, but about the culture of abuse and suppression against women in politics.”

Her claims have sparked widespread reactions, with some calling for an independent investigation while others view the allegations as part of an ongoing political power struggle within the Senate.

Akpabio Denies Allegations, Calls It Blackmail

Senate President Akpabio has swiftly denied the allegations, describing them as an attempt to tarnish his reputation. He dismissed Akpoti’s claims as politically motivated, suggesting that she is using sensational accusations to gain public sympathy amid internal party disputes.

A statement from his office read, “These allegations are false, baseless, and a desperate attempt to divert attention from her own political troubles. The Senate remains a place of dignity and respect, and I will not engage in this kind of distraction.”

Threat of Suspension Looms Over Akpoti

Beyond the allegations, Akpoti is also facing internal Senate scrutiny, with reports suggesting she could be suspended over ongoing conflicts with the Senate leadership. Some lawmakers argue that her actions are bringing disrepute to the legislative chamber, while her supporters claim she is being silenced for speaking out against injustice.

Political analysts suggest that this controversy could have wider implications, potentially influencing the dynamics of power in the Senate and shaping discussions about the treatment of female politicians in Nigeria.

Public Reactions and Calls for Investigation

The allegations have triggered mixed reactions across the country. Some activists and women’s rights groups have demanded a full investigation, arguing that sexual harassment claims in politics should not be taken lightly. Others believe the matter is being politicized, urging both parties to resolve their differences through legal and ethical means.

With the controversy escalating, Nigerians await further developments as calls for accountability, justice, and fairness continue to grow. Whether this scandal will lead to major political shifts or fade into the background remains to be seen.
