University renaming

President Bola Tinubu has chosen to rename the University of Maiduguri in Borno State as Muhammadu Buhari University.

This decision was made known during a special Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Thursday at Aso Rock Villa, Abuja.

The event honored the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, at age 82.

At the end of the session, Tinubu said;

“Let’s rename the University of Maiduguri to Muhammadu Buhari University,” a move to recognize Buhari’s contributions to Nigeria.

Paying Tribute to a Great Legacy

In a heartfelt speech, Tinubu called Buhari “a man of goodness, honesty, and respect.”

He noted that all leaders have flaws but praised Buhari’s strong dedication to the country.

“His legacy will spark conversations, but his solid values, steady principles, and clean reputation will last for years,” Tinubu said.

He described Buhari’s life as one of service to Nigeria and deep faith, shaped by his long career in the military and public office.

Recognizing Humble Leadership

Tinubu admired Buhari’s simple nature and refusal to be swayed by power.

“He stood firm, unbothered by praise or temptation, accepting the quiet life of doing right over seeking popularity,” he explained.

Tinubu saw Buhari’s courage as quiet and his love for Nigeria shown through actions.

Their partnership in the 2015 election, which brought Nigeria’s first peaceful party change, was a key moment.

“He led with dignity, faced challenges silently, and ruled with grace,” Tinubu added.

A Modest Life After Leadership

Tinubu valued Buhari’s humble return to Daura after his term.

“He didn’t stay to pull strings or chase fame, but lived simply, letting others take the lead,” he noted.

Even in his final moments, Buhari remained peaceful. “No complaints, just a calm trust in God’s plan—that’s the leader we mourn,” Tinubu said.

He thanked the Inter-Ministerial Committee and Katsina Governor Dikko Radda for a quick, respectful funeral, calling it an honor to lead the Daura procession.

A Warm Farewell

Tinubu ended with a prayer:

“Mai Gaskiya, the People’s Hero, the Farmer Leader, your work is complete. May Allah forgive his errors and welcome him to paradise.

Let his life encourage Nigerians to serve with bravery, resolve, and care. President Buhari, thank you—your memory will stay with Nigeria.”

The renaming and tribute highlight Buhari’s disciplined leadership and gentle spirit, ensuring his influence lives on through education and national pride.
