AFCON 2023: Tunisia eliminated, the feat of Namibia

The Eagles of Carthage faced a must-win situation against South Africa to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) but fell short, resulting in their elimination. In contrast, Namibia achieved a surprising qualification for the tournament’s knockout stages.

In Group E, Tunisia’s hopes ended after a 0-0 draw against South Africa, a result that allowed the Bafana Bafana to advance to the round of 16. Tunisia started the match with determination but struggled against a solid South African defense, leading to a lackluster performance.

Despite having more possession, Tunisia managed only one clear chance, a header from Haythem Jouini that went wide in the final moments of the game. The Carthage Eagles exit the competition with just two points and one goal scored, a disappointing outcome for a team that reached the World Cup and had previously qualified for the knockout stage in eight of their ten CAN appearances.

Meanwhile, the match between Mali, who topped the group, and Namibia ended similarly. Namibia secured a historic qualification as one of the best third-placed teams, finishing with four points. Both teams appeared content with the draw, as it benefited Mali and allowed Namibia to advance.

Namibia’s success could lead to further history if they manage to defeat Angola in their next match on January 27.
