The countdown to Africa’s most prestigious football tournament has officially begun. On Thursday, the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy was unveiled in London, marking the start of the “Morocco 2025 Diaspora Tour.”
This ceremonial launch celebrates the spirit of African football on a global stage. The silverware will travel from London to Paris and then to Tokyo, building anticipation for the upcoming championship.
Wanyama Highlights the Struggle
Former Kenyan midfield star Victor Wanyama attended the unveiling. He spoke candidly about the grueling nature of the qualification process.
“You go through a lot; it’s not easy,” Wanyama remarked. “It takes great effort, both physically and technically, to reach that level. Nothing comes easy nobody is there to joke.”
He emphasized the immense commitment required from players and teams, noting that African football has become incredibly competitive.
Morocco Ready to Host
The tournament returns to North African soil this winter. Morocco will host the spectacle, which runs from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026.
Matches will take place across major cities, including Casablanca, Marrakech, Rabat, and Agadir. The event promises to be a showcase of African talent and unity.
Rising Stars and Legends
Wanyama observed that the gap between traditional powerhouses and smaller nations is closing. He cited Madagascar as a prime example of a team rising from obscurity to challenge the elite.
“African people have a deep passion for football,” he said.
Anticipation is high for the stars expected to shine in Morocco. Senegal’s Sadio Mané and Morocco’s captain Achraf Hakimi remain key figures. Furthermore, Egypt’s Mohamed Salah will lead the Pharaohs in pursuit of another title.
They will be joined by a new generation of talent, including Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen and Ghana’s Mohammed Kudus, all eager to make their mark on AFCON history.
