On Wednesday June 11, 2025, elected officials and FIFA representatives launched the one-year countdown to the 2026 FIFA World Cup at a vibrant ceremony at the Pérez Art Museum Miami.

The city, set to host seven tournament matches at Hard Rock Stadium, is gearing up for a global spotlight.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava announced that the event is expected to draw over one million visitors, generating more than $1 billion in economic impact for the region.

Mexico City Lights Up for History

Simultaneously, Mexico City marked the milestone by illuminating iconic buildings in FIFA’s designated green hue, celebrating its role as the host of the tournament’s opening match on June 11, 2026.

Estadio Azteca will make history as the first stadium to host three men’s World Cup opening matches, cementing its legacy.

Mexico’s national team will play all three of their group-stage games on home soil, boosting local enthusiasm.

A Historic, Expanded Tournament

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, will be the largest ever.

And it’ll also be featuring 48 teams and 104 matches across 16 host cities.

From Vancouver to Houston, stadiums and fan zones are being upgraded to accommodate millions of fans.

Mexico City’s Estadio Azteca will set the stage, while Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium will host key fixtures, including knockout rounds.

Economic and Cultural Impact

Miami’s preparations include unveiling a countdown clock and a cultural video featuring Marc Anthony, highlighting the city’s readiness to welcome the world.

Mexico City’s Mayor Clara Brugada pledged a tournament free from racism and xenophobia, backed by inclusive cultural events.

Mexico anticipates 5.5 million additional visitors and $3.17 billion in revenue, underscoring the event’s massive economic potential.

Uniting North America

The countdown ceremonies reflect the collaborative spirit of the tri-nation hosting effort.

With 16 host cities unveiling locally inspired countdown clocks, the tournament promises to unite North America through soccer.

As preparations intensify, the 2026 FIFA World Cup is poised to be a historic celebration of sport, culture, and global unity.
