Wale Edun

In a surprising yet unanimous decision, Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, has been elected President of the Nigerian Boxing Federation (NBF).

The vote took place on Saturday at the MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, where Edun secured all 12 votes without opposition. Known for his sharp economic strategies, Edun now steps into the ring with a bold vision to punch above Nigeria’s weight in global boxing.

Uncontested Victory, Contagious Vision

Edun’s election was a clean sweep, reflecting strong confidence in his leadership. In his acceptance speech, he outlined ambitious reforms:

“We’re committed to rebuilding Nigerian boxing from the ground up, through transparency, inclusivity, and powerful grassroots programs,” he declared.

His goal? To reclaim Nigeria’s spot on the world stage, where legends like Dick Tiger once reigned supreme.

Competitive Vice Presidency

While Edun’s top spot was unchallenged, the vice presidential race delivered drama. Hon. Omonlei Imadu from the South-West triumphed over North-Central’s Mighty Mike with an 8-4 vote.

Imadu, celebrated for his tireless work in local boxing circuits, hailed the moment as a “turning point.” He praised Edun’s genuine love for the sport and pledged full support: “Together, we’ll turn vision into victories.”

Praise for Fair Play

Imadu also applauded the National Sports Commission for orchestrating a smooth, credible election. Under Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade, the process earned trust, a rare feat in Nigerian sports governance.

More Than a Suit: Edun’s Boxing Roots

Edun isn’t just a policymaker in a tracksuit. Since 2010, he has chaired the Lagos Boxing Hall of Fame (LBHF), a nonprofit he founded to scout and train young fighters.

The organization runs monthly tournaments, including the prestigious Governor’s Belt Championship, and sends talents to international bouts. Many of Nigeria’s rising stars owe their start to Edun’s initiative.

Beyond boxing, he serves on the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Foundation board and leads Livewell Initiative, a health-focused NGO. His diverse roles highlight a leader who believes in empowering youth body, mind, and future.

A New Era for Nigerian Boxing?

Edun’s dual roles raise eyebrows: Can a busy finance minister truly revive a struggling sport? Critics wonder if his economic duties will sideline boxing.

Supporters counter that his discipline and resources could be the knockout punch Nigeria needs.

With grassroots revival at the core, Edun aims to unearth the next Anthony Joshua or Samuel Peter. His unopposed win signals unity but delivering results will be the real fight.

Ready for the Comeback?

Nigeria’s boxing glory days aren’t over. Under Edun, the ring could roar again. From local gyms to Olympic podiums, the journey starts now.
