Nigeria’s Flying Eagles earned a place in the Round of 16 at the 24th FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile with a gritty 1-1 draw against Colombia.

The match, held at Estadio Fiscal de Talca, showcased the seven-time African champions’ resilience against a tough South American side.

Strong Defensive Start

Goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt proved vital early on, thwarting Colombian attacks with key saves in the 23rd and 26th minutes.

Despite Colombia’s pressure, Nigeria’s attackers Tahir Maigana, Kparobo Arierhi, and Suleman Sani kept the opposition defense on edge, hitting the post multiple times.

Colombia Strikes, Nigeria Responds

Colombia took the lead in the 51st minute when Kener Gonzalez scored, assisted by Neyser Villareal. The Flying Eagles fought back fiercely.

Odinaka Okoro nearly equalized with a header in the 76th minute. Nigeria’s persistence paid off in the 86th minute when captain Daniel Bameyi converted a penalty after a Colombian defender handled Maigana’s shot.

Late Push Falls Short

In the final moments, Arierhi’s 89th-minute effort was blocked, denying Nigeria a dramatic winner. The draw secured their advancement, setting up a Round of 16 clash with Argentina.

Next Challenge: Argentina Rematch

Nigeria will face Argentina on Wednesday at Estadio Nacional Julio Martinez Pradanos in Santiago.

This matchup echoes their 2-0 victory over Argentina in the 2023 U-20 World Cup quarter-finals in San Juan. Meanwhile, Colombia will play South Africa, and Norway meets Paraguay in other Round of 16 games.

Nigeria’s Momentum Builds

The Flying Eagles’ spirited performance signals their intent to go far in Chile. With strong teamwork and determination, they aim to repeat past successes against formidable opponents.
