Tiger Woods has withdrawn from consideration as captain of the United States team for the 2027 Ryder Cup, as he shifts focus to his health following a recent car crash and legal troubles.
The 15-time major champion was also granted permission by a Florida court to leave the United States for specialised medical treatment abroad.
Court Clears Woods for Overseas Treatment
A judge in Florida approved Woods’ request to travel outside the country to undergo what his legal team described as an “intensive, highly individualized” inpatient treatment programme.
His lawyer argued that the golfer’s complex medical condition and constant public scrutiny made it difficult for him to receive effective care within the United States.
According to court filings, the decision was based on recommendations from his treating physician, who emphasised the urgent need for a private and comprehensive recovery plan.
DUI Charges Follow Crash
The development comes days after Woods pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor charges, including driving under the influence, property damage, and refusal to undergo a urinalysis test following a rollover crash in Jupiter, Florida.
Police reports indicated that Woods showed signs of impairment at the scene, though a breathalyser test did not detect alcohol. He reportedly told officers he had taken prescription medication prior to the incident.
Steps Away from Golf
In a public statement, Woods announced he would temporarily step away from professional golf to prioritise his health and recovery.
“I understand the seriousness of the situation and I am committed to taking the time needed to return in a healthier and stronger place,” he said, while requesting privacy for himself and his family.
Ryder Cup Role Relinquished
The PGA of America confirmed that Woods would no longer serve as captain for the 2027 Ryder Cup, backing his decision to focus on his well-being.
The organisation described Woods as a “legend of the sport” and expressed full support for his recovery journey, adding that a new captain would be announced at a later date.
Widespread Support from Golf Community
Tributes and messages of support have poured in from across the golfing world, including the PGA Tour and Augusta National Golf Club.
Both organisations praised Woods’ impact on the sport and emphasised that his health remains the top priority.
Focus on Recovery
As one of golf’s most iconic figures, Woods’ decision marks a significant moment in his career. For now, the focus shifts away from competition and leadership roles to rehabilitation and long-term recovery.
