On Monday, October 20, 2025, Morocco’s U-20 football team made history by defeating Argentina 2-0 in the FIFA U-20 World Cup final in Santiago, Chile.

The Atlas Lions, led by standout striker Yassir Zabiri, dominated early with two first-half goals. Zabiri scored in the 12th and 29th minutes, stunning the Argentine supporters and securing Morocco’s first-ever FIFA trophy.

Despite Argentina’s second-half push, Morocco’s defense, anchored by captain Rayan El-Mourabet, held firm. Goalkeeper Youssef Bakkali shone with crucial saves, ensuring a clean sheet and sealing the victory.

Challenging Path to Glory

Morocco’s journey to the title was formidable. Placed in a tough group with Spain, Brazil, and Mexico, the team faced an early setback with a loss to Mexico. However, they rebounded impressively, topping the group with wins over Brazil and Spain.

In the knockout stages, Morocco overcame South Korea in the round of 16, outplayed the United States in the quarter-finals, and triumphed over France in a tense penalty shootout in the semi-finals.

The final against Argentina capped a remarkable tournament, showcasing Morocco’s resilience and skill against top global teams.

A Milestone for African Football

Morocco’s triumph marks the second time an African nation has won the U-20 World Cup, following Ghana’s 2009 victory over Brazil.

This achievement highlights Morocco’s rise as a football powerhouse and brings pride to African sport. The win underscores the continent’s growing influence on the global stage, with Morocco’s disciplined play and attacking flair earning widespread admiration.

Key Performers and Impact

Zabiri’s brace in the final proved decisive, cementing his status as a rising star. El-Mourabet’s leadership and Bakkali’s goalkeeping heroics were pivotal in Morocco’s defensive solidity.

Coach Tariq Sektioui’s strategy of blending aggression with tactical discipline outmaneuvered opponents throughout the tournament.

This victory is more than a sporting milestone; it inspires young athletes across Africa. Morocco’s success follows their senior team’s strong performances in recent global competitions, signaling a bright future for the nation’s football program.

Looking Ahead

The win sparks celebrations across Morocco, with fans flooding the streets of Rabat and Casablanca. It also boosts confidence ahead of Morocco’s co-hosting of the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

For African football, this moment reinforces the potential of youth development programs to compete with the world’s best.

As the Atlas Lions return home, their victory serves as a beacon of hope, proving that determination and talent can overcome even the toughest challenges.

Morocco’s U-20 team has not only claimed a title but also etched its name in football history, paving the way for future generations.
