2030 Commonwealth Games
Nigeria bids to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games.

Nigeria has officially expressed interest in bidding to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games with Abuja proposed as the host city.

This announcement was made following the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) executive meeting held on April 3, 2025, in Abuja.

In a statement released by Tony Nezianya, the Public Relations Officer of the NOC, Nigeria met the March 28, 2025 deadline for submitting its Expression of Interest (EOI) to host the globally acclaimed multi-sport event.

However, a formal bid will only proceed with the Federal Government’s approval and support.

If successful, Nigeria would become the first West African country to host the Commonwealth Games. Its success will help project the nation’s development, cultural richness, and commitment to global sports excellence.

Why Nigeria Wants to Host the 2030 Commonwealth Games

According to the NOC, hosting the 2030 Games in Abuja presents a strategic opportunity to:

  • Enhance Nigeria’s global image through a world-class sports event
  • Revitalise sports infrastructure, particularly in Abuja and surrounding states
  • Boost tourism and hospitality, attracting thousands of international visitors
  • Create jobs and empower local businesses during construction and event management
  • Promote unity through sport

Nigeria previously hosted a major multi-sport event, the 8th All Africa Games (COJA 2003), also in Abuja.

That event demonstrated Nigeria’s capability to manage large-scale international competitions and is expected to serve as a foundation for the proposed 2030 bid.

Infrastructure Development and Economic Impact

Bidding for the 2030 Commonwealth Games is expected to catalyse massive investments in sports infrastructure, including new and upgraded venues, improved transportation systems, and expanded accommodations.

These developments will not only benefit athletes but also benefit future generations of Nigerians.

The event preparation and execution phases are projected to generate thousands of jobs, from construction to logistics.

Inspiring a New Generation of Athletes

Beyond infrastructure and economic benefits, the NOC believes that hosting the Games will inspire a new generation of Nigerian athletes. It will provide them with the motivation and resources to compete at the highest level.

Australia and India are some of the countries that have also bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games.
