OLISEH

Former Nigerian national team midfielder Sunday Oliseh praised defender Benjamin Fredrick for his standout performance in the recent World Cup playoff semi-final. Nigeria defeated Gabon 4–1 after extra time to secure the crucial victory.

Nigeria advanced to the playoff stage as one of the top runners-up from the African qualifiers, boosted by a 4–0 win over the Benin Republic that included a Victor Osimhen hat-trick. In the semi-final clash, the scoring was opened by Akor Adams before Gabon equalized, forcing the match into extra time.

Chidera Ejuke regained the lead for Nigeria, and Osimhen added two more goals to seal the 4–1 win. Fredrick played a vital role, anchoring a solid defense alongside fellow defender Calvin Bassey that successfully contained Gabon’s offensive efforts.

Veteran’s High Praise

Oliseh used his social media account on Friday to celebrate the defender. He singled out Fredrick as “the most influential player” for the Super Eagles in the match against Gabon. Oliseh specifically highlighted the defender’s positioning, pace, decisiveness, and his effective, straightforward style of play.

“I personally found Benjamin Fredrick to be the most influential player yesterday versus Gabon for SuperEagles. Always well positioned, pacy, decisive and played simply,” Oliseh wrote. He concluded with optimism for the next stage: “Now let’s celebrate today. But from tomorrow Congo needs to be our next victim.”

The veteran’s endorsement comes as Nigeria prepares to face the winner of the Cameroon versus DR Congo playoff tie on November 16. That final match will determine which team advances to the inter-continental playoff, securing a chance to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Fredrick’s Journey

The 20-year-old Fredrick began his football career at the Simoiben Academy in Kaduna. He subsequently played for ABS FC and Nasarawa United in Nigeria before making a move overseas.

In 2023, he was signed by English club Brentford FC. He was then sent on loan to Belgian side K.F.C. Dender E.H. to gain vital first-team experience.

Primarily a central defender, Fredrick’s versatility allows him to also play as a right-back or in a defensive midfield role.

He successfully made the transition from the Nigerian under-20 team to the senior Super Eagles squad in May 2025, following strong performances at the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
