Portugal ended a 25-year drought against Germany with a thrilling 2-1 victory in the UEFA Nations League semifinal on Wednesday night in Munich, led by an ageless Cristiano Ronaldo.

At 40, Ronaldo scored his 137th international goal in his record-extending 220th appearance, becoming the oldest player to score against Germany and driving Portugal to their first win on German soil since October 1985.

Ronaldo’s Milestone Moment

The match marked a personal triumph for Ronaldo, who had lost all five of his previous encounters with Germany.

His 68th-minute goal, a clinical finish from a Nuno Mendes assist, sealed Portugal’s comeback after trailing 1-0.

The victory erased memories of past defeats, including Euro 2008 and the 2014 World Cup, and underscored Ronaldo’s enduring brilliance.

“Cristiano is an example — his hunger is contagious,” said head coach Roberto Martinez, praising the star’s relentless drive to improve.

Portugal’s Dramatic Comeback

Germany took the lead early in the second half through Florian Wirtz, who headed in a precise cross past goalkeeper Diogo Costa.

However, Martinez’s tactical substitutions shifted the momentum. Francisco Conceicao, introduced in the 58th minute, equalized with a stunning long-range strike just five minutes later.

Ronaldo’s goal followed, with Vitinha, fresh from PSG’s Champions League triumph, adding midfield composure to secure Portugal’s dominance in the closing stages.

Game-Changing Substitutions

Martinez’s strategic changes proved decisive. Conceicao, son of former Portugal star Sergio Conceicao, brought energy, while Vitinha’s vision stabilized the midfield.

Germany’s goalkeeper, Marc-André ter Stegen, made several key saves to keep the scoreline close as Portugal pressed forward with confidence.

The victory highlighted Portugal’s depth and adaptability, setting the stage for their final against the winner of France vs. Spain.

Looking Ahead

Portugal now awaits the outcome of Thursday’s semifinal between France and Spain, while Germany will face the loser in the third-place playoff.

The win not only marks a historic moment for Portugal but also reinforces Ronaldo’s legacy as a player who defies age and expectations.

As Martinez noted, Ronaldo’s focus remains on the next challenge, inspiring teammates and fans alike with his unyielding pursuit of excellence.

Ronaldo’s Lasting Impact

Ronaldo’s performance continues to redefine football’s boundaries, setting new records with every match.

His leadership and goal-scoring prowess remain vital to Portugal’s ambitions, proving that age is no barrier to greatness.

As the UEFA Nations League final approaches, Portugal’s triumph over Germany signals their intent to claim the title, with Ronaldo at the heart of their campaign.
