FLAMENGO

Fresh off their maiden Champions League triumph in May, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) are now just one win away from global domination.

On Wednesday, the French powerhouse will face Brazilian heavyweights Flamengo in the final of the FIFA Intercontinental Cup.

PSG qualified directly for the tournament showpiece, enjoying a bye to the final. in contrast, Flamengo had to battle their way through the earlier rounds, overcoming tough opposition in Cruz Azul and Pyramids to book their spot in the decider.

Chasing History

For PSG head coach Luis Enrique, the match represents a massive opportunity to write a new chapter in the club’s history. Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, he dismissed the idea that the Brazilian side would have more hunger than his squad.

“We have been trying for some time to keep making history for our club, so a first Intercontinental Cup would be historic for us,” Enrique said. “That is already a big motivation for us and for the club. So I don’t think that Flamengo will be more motivated than us.”

Enrique acknowledged the relentless pressure that comes with managing a top-tier European team, noting that at a big club, every loss is treated as a major crisis, while the significance of a win often depends on the context.

However, he emphasized that this specific trophy carries immense weight because it is a first for the Parisians.

The Quest for a “Sextuple”

A victory on Wednesday would seal an extraordinary year for PSG. It would mark their sixth title of 2025, adding to an overflowing trophy cabinet that already includes:

  • UEFA Champions League
  • Ligue 1French Cup
  • French Super Cup
  • UEFA Super Cup

Standing in their way is a formidable Flamengo side that has enjoyed its own stellar year. The Brazilian club enters the final as the reigning champions of both the Copa Libertadores and Brazil’s Serie A.
