The streets of Senegal’s capital transformed into a massive victory parade on Monday as the national football team returned home following their successful campaign in the Africa Cup of Nations.

The “Teranga Lions” secured the continental title with a 1-0 victory over the tournament’s host nation, Morocco. The win has sparked a wave of national pride, drawing massive crowds to witness the return of their sporting heroes.

A Victory Marred by Stoppage-Time Tension

The final match was not without its complications. During second-half stoppage time, the Senegalese squad briefly walked off the pitch to protest a controversial penalty decision.

While the team eventually returned to finish the match and secure their one-goal lead, the brief exit drew swift criticism from international football governing bodies.

  • FIFA Response: President Gianni Infantino issued a statement on Monday labeling the decision to leave the field as “unacceptable.”
  • CAF Stance: The Confederation of African Football also released a statement denouncing the team’s mid-match protest.

A Hero’s Welcome in the Capital

Despite the officiating controversy, the mood in Dakar remained purely celebratory. The team’s flight arrived from Morocco late Monday evening, where the players were met on the tarmac by the country’s top leadership, including President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko.

Following the formal reception with government officials, the squad—fronted by star player Sadio Mané—embarked on a victory procession.

The Parade Route

The champions traveled through several local neighborhoods before reaching a climax at Dakar’s famous Corniche. Supporters lined the entire route, waving flags and cheering as the motorcade passed. For many in the capital, the victory represents a significant milestone in the nation’s sporting history, overshadowing the technical disputes of the final match.
