Springboks

The world champion Springboks delivered a brutal masterclass in Cardiff on Saturday. They decimated Wales with a historic 73-0 victory. This result underscores their dominance at the top of global rugby.

However, a red card for South African lock Eben Etzebeth overshadowed the spectacular performance in the dying minutes. The referee sent him off permanently following a serious foul. This incident soured an otherwise flawless afternoon for the visitors.

A Historic Drubbing

The match was a procession from start to finish. South Africa ran in 11 tries against a shell-shocked Welsh defense.

The scoreline marked the heaviest home defeat in Wales’ history. Furthermore, the visitors held the hosts scoreless at the Principality Stadium for the first time in decades.

The Springboks overwhelmingly controlled possession. Wales spent the entire 80 minutes chasing shadows.

This victory capped a stellar season for the four-time World Cup winners. It secured their 13th win in 15 matches. Consequently, it cemented their status as the world’s number-one ranked team ahead of the 2027 tournament draw.

Etzebeth Sent Off

Despite the on-field brilliance, the atmosphere shifted sharply in the final moments. Eben Etzebeth received a straight red card for an eye-gouging incident.

The veteran lock now faces a disciplinary hearing. He looks at a potential minimum ban of 12 weeks. Notably, he becomes the third South African lock to receive a straight red card this November alone.

Coach Reacts to Discipline Issues

Coach Rassie Erasmus addressed the incident after the match. He did not shy away from the severity of the situation. He acknowledged that the dismissal tarnished the performance.

“I thought it was a justified red card,” Erasmus admitted. “I’m not sure if it was provoked, but that’s not the way we want to play.”

South Africa finishes the season on top of the world rankings. However, questions regarding discipline will likely follow the squad into the off-season.
