Heavyweight boxing star Anthony Joshua is currently recovering in a Lagos hospital following a tragic road accident. On Monday, December 29, 2025, Simon Field, the Deputy Head of Mission for the British High Commission, visited the champion to monitor his progress.

The visit comes after a fatal crash involving Joshua’s vehicle on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. British officials were notified immediately and are now working closely with the Ogun and Lagos State governments to support those affected.

Details of the Tragic Accident

The accident occurred around midday on Monday. Joshua was a passenger in a Toyota Lexus SUV with three other individuals when the vehicle crashed. While the champion is currently in stable condition, the incident resulted in two tragic fatalities.

The deceased have been identified as:

  • Ayodele Kelvin Olu: A 36-year-old Nigerian-British citizen.

  • Gami Sina: A 36-year-old British citizen.

The British High Commission has confirmed that they have contacted the families of the deceased to provide necessary support during this difficult time.

High-Level State Support and Medical Care

Following the crash, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu spent several hours at the hospital. Governor Abiodun took a personal interest in the situation, supervising the medical care provided to the boxer.

“As soon as I was informed, I headed straight to the hospital,” Governor Abiodun stated. “We both took charge of the situation and remained at the hospital for over seven hours.”

Additionally, other senior officials visited the facility. These included Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector-General of Police, and Bukola Olopade, Director-General of the National Sports Commission.

Presidential Condolences and Support

President Bola Tinubu has been fully briefed on the tragedy. Consequently, the President made separate telephone calls to Anthony Joshua and his mother to offer his deepest sympathies.

During these conversations, the President offered prayers for the family. He noted that this “immense tragedy has cast a deep shadow over this season.” Furthermore, he emphasized the importance of national unity and supporting one another as “brothers and sisters with a shared destiny.”

Current Condition and Official Investigation

The Ogun State Government is satisfied with the professionalism of the medical team. They confirmed that Joshua remains in stable condition and is receiving high-quality treatment.

Meanwhile, authorities have ordered a full investigation into the cause of the accident. The government has pledged to make the findings public once the probe is finished. They will release further updates regarding Joshua’s health and the investigation as they become available.
