Ghana’s former president, John Dramani Mahama, has clinched victory in the 2024 presidential election, marking a successful third attempt at returning to the country’s highest office. Mahama, representing the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), defeated the ruling party’s candidate, who conceded defeat and extended congratulations shortly after the results were declared.

The Electoral Commission of Ghana announced the final tally, confirming Mahama’s victory with 52% of the vote, compared to the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate’s 47%. The remaining votes were distributed among minor candidates. This win is significant, as it underscores the public’s growing demand for change following economic challenges that characterized the incumbent administration’s tenure.

This marks Mahama’s second term in office, having previously served from 2012 to 2017. His return to power has been widely interpreted as a testament to his enduring political influence and the NDC’s strong grassroots mobilization across the country.

The ruling party’s candidate promptly conceded defeat, calling for unity and pledging support for the nation’s democratic values. “The voice of the people is clear,” he stated in a televised speech. “I wish John Mahama a fruitful tenure as he leads Ghana forward.”

Mahama received an outpouring of congratulations from local and international leaders. Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu was among the first to send a message, lauding Ghana’s peaceful election process as a beacon of democracy in Africa. Other leaders echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the role of the election in strengthening democratic institutions across the continent.

Despite the celebrations, Mahama faces significant challenges as he takes the reins of a nation grappling with inflation, youth unemployment, and mounting public debt. In his victory speech, he reassured citizens of his commitment to economic recovery, stating, “This victory is for every Ghanaian yearning for progress. Together, we will rebuild and restore hope.”

The transition process is already underway, with Mahama’s team outlining a roadmap for the administration’s first 100 days. The president-elect has also pledged to form an inclusive government to address the nation’s pressing issues collaboratively.

This election is being hailed as a milestone for Ghana, a country known for its peaceful democratic transitions. International observers commended the Electoral Commission for conducting a credible and transparent election, further solidifying Ghana’s reputation as a democratic leader in the region.
