Crisis Deepens in Edo State as LG Chairpersons Face Impeachment

The political turmoil in Edo State escalates as several local government chairpersons face impeachment amid allegations of misconduct and partisan interference. The unfolding crisis has drawn national attention, with key political stakeholders trading accusations over the legitimacy and motives behind the actions.

In a recent wave of impeachments:

  • The chairpersons of Uhunmwonde and Orhionmwon Local Government Areas (LGAs) were removed from office, following allegations of financial misconduct and administrative inefficiencies.
  • This comes shortly after other council leaders faced similar fates, signaling a widening rift within the state’s local government framework.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo has accused Senator Monday Okpebholo, representing Edo Central, of orchestrating the impeachments under the guise of addressing financial irregularities. The party claims that the move is politically motivated, aimed at destabilizing PDP-led councils to pave the way for All Progressives Congress (APC) influence in the state.

In a strongly worded statement, the PDP urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene and prevent further actions that could lead to unrest in the state. “The APC is deliberately creating chaos in Edo. If this state burns, Senator Okpebholo should be held responsible,” the statement read.

The APC, however, has dismissed the allegations as baseless, maintaining that the impeachments were instigated by legitimate concerns over governance and financial accountability. The party insists that the process adhered to constitutional provisions and reflects the will of the people in the affected LGAs.

The deepening crisis has sparked fears of a breakdown in local governance and raised concerns about the independence of legislative processes at the grassroots level.

  • Observers warn that the ongoing conflict could undermine development projects and disrupt essential services in the affected LGAs.
  • There is also growing apprehension that the dispute could exacerbate tensions between the PDP-led state government and the APC-dominated federal government.

Civil society organizations and community leaders have called for dialogue and a swift resolution to the crisis. They emphasize the need for political maturity and collaboration to ensure stability and development in Edo State.
