Delta family petition police over the death of their son in police custody.

Petition has been made by a grieving family in Delta State to top law enforcement authorities over the alleged torture and death of 24-year-old Paul Obukohwo, a promising singer, who died while in police custody.

The incident, which has sparked outrage in the Agbarho community, Ughelli North Local Government Area, is now drawing national attention.

The family has sent formal petitions to the Police Service Commission (PSC), the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG), and Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, demanding justice for their son’s death.

Victim Allegedly Detained for Questioning Police

According to the petition submitted by Mr. Oghenekohwo Odioko to the Delta State Commissioner of Police, Paul Obukohwo had gone to the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) office in Asaba on March 26, 2025, to secure the release of his younger brother’s friend, Mr. Prosper Odili, who had been arrested during a routine patrol for wearing camouflage shorts.

The petition alleges that Paul was unlawfully detained by the RRS officers simply for asking why Prosper was arrested. His detention, the family claims, led to his tragic death following alleged torture while in custody.

“Paul was only trying to bail a friend of his younger brother. He never imagined it would cost him his life,” a family member lamented.

Timeline of Events Leading to Death

On the morning of March 26, 2025, Paul’s younger brother, Ejiro Obukohwo, was reportedly on his way to work with his friend, Prosper Odili, when they were stopped by the RRS patrol team. The officers allegedly arrested Prosper for wearing a camouflage knicker and forced him into their vehicle.

When Paul later showed up at the RRS office to inquire and advocate for Prosper’s release, he was allegedly harassed, detained, and tortured.

The family believes that excessive use of force and inhumane treatment during his detention directly resulted in his untimely death.

Petition: Family Demands Justice

The Obukohwo family is calling for:

  • An independent investigation into Paul’s death.
  • Disciplinary action against the officers involved.
  • Autopsy and medical records to determine the cause of death.
  • Immediate intervention by the Delta State Government and national security agencies.

“We are seeking justice for Paul. No family should go through the pain of losing a loved one under such cruel and unjust circumstances,” the petition reads.

Growing Concern Over Police Brutality in Nigeria

The tragic death of Paul Obukohwo adds to a growing list of alleged police brutality cases in Nigeria, especially involving young citizens.

Advocacy groups and civil society organizations have continued to push for police reforms, increased accountability, and the prosecution of erring officers to restore public confidence in law enforcement.
