Israel Orders Gaza City Evacuation Amid Offensive

Israel’s military issued a full evacuation order for Gaza City, the first such directive in the ongoing conflict, as it prepares to escalate operations in northern Gaza, where famine threatens hundreds of thousands of residents.

Intensified Military Operations

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) urged residents to move to a designated humanitarian zone in southern Gaza, claiming Hamas uses the city as a stronghold.

Israel’s Defense Minister announced the demolition of 30 high-rise buildings, alleging they housed Hamas infrastructure.

The Prime Minister described these actions as the prelude to a larger ground offensive, asserting that Hamas had embedded surveillance systems in the structures.

Limited Evacuation Efforts

Despite the order, many residents remain in Gaza City, wary of moving south due to repeated displacements and doubts about safety.

An estimated 1 million people, nearly half of Gaza’s 2.1 million population, live in the northern region. Since mid-August 2025, about 97,000 people have been displaced, with roughly 50,000 heading south and others moving within the north.

Worsening Humanitarian Crisis

The humanitarian situation is dire, with overcrowded displacement sites and high costs—often exceeding $1,000—preventing many from relocating.

Over 86,000 tents are delayed at the border, hindering aid efforts. The lack of food, water, and shelter makes mass evacuation nearly impossible.

On September 8, 2025, six adults died from malnutrition-related causes, adding to 259 such deaths since June 2025 and 140 children since October 2023.

Conflict Background

The conflict began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas-led militants killed 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducted 251.

Israel’s response has resulted in over 64,500 Palestinian deaths, with half being women and children, and displaced 90% of Gaza’s population, devastating cities.

Despite recent aid deliveries, including 1,500 food trucks last week, shortages persist.

Local Conditions

A doctor at Shifa Hospital in Gaza City reported a tense atmosphere but said the facility continues to treat patients. No significant displacement was observed near the hospital, though demolished high-rises have left many families without shelter.

Path Forward

Israel’s intensified campaign deepens Gaza’s humanitarian crisis, with famine and displacement threatening residents. Urgent international action is needed to ensure safe evacuations and deliver critical aid to avert further suffering.
