Pope Leo XIV addressed over 400 bishops from 38 countries in St Peter’s Basilica on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, emphasizing the importance of priestly celibacy and urging “firm and decisive action” to address sexual abuse by clergy.
The pontiff’s speech outlined key responsibilities for bishops in leading their congregations amid ongoing challenges facing the Catholic Church.
Celibacy as a Pillar of Priesthood
Pope Leo XIV underscored celibacy as a fundamental aspect of a bishop’s life, describing it as a form of spiritual poverty.
“Together with material poverty, the life of the bishop is also marked by that specific form of poverty, which is celibacy and virginity for the sake of the kingdom of heaven,” he said.
He emphasized that celibacy is not merely abstaining from marriage but involves “practising chastity of heart and conduct” to reflect the Church’s holiness and serve as a model of Christian discipleship.
Zero Tolerance for Abuse
For the second time in a week, the pontiff addressed the Church’s decades-long sexual abuse scandals.
He called on bishops to take a zero-tolerance stance on all forms of abuse, particularly those involving minors.
He further stated, “Bishops must be firm and decisive in dealing with situations that can cause scandal and with every case of abuse, especially involving minors, and fully respect the legislation currently in force,”
This directive reinforces the Church’s commitment to addressing sexual and spiritual abuse decisively.
A Call for Simplicity and Closeness
Pope Leo XIV also urged bishops to embody simplicity and humility, living in poverty and staying close to their communities through both words and actions.
He emphasized that bishops should model a life of service, aligning with the Church’s mission to be a holy and chaste institution.
The pontiff’s remarks come as the Catholic Church continues to grapple with the fallout from abuse scandals and seeks to restore trust among its global congregation.
His call for accountability and adherence to celibacy signals a renewed focus on reform and spiritual integrity within the Church.
