Thailand Earthquake: Powerful 7.7 Magnitude Tremor Rocks Region

A massive 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar and Thailand on Friday afternoon, causing widespread panic, structural damage, and mass evacuations. The tremor violently shook high-rise buildings in Bangkok, sending thousands rushing into the streets and causing the collapse of a construction site where dozens of workers are feared trapped.

The quake hit around 1:30 p.m. local time, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), and was classified as a shallow earthquake, striking at a depth of just 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) with its epicenter in Myanmar.

Aftershock Worsens the Thailand Earthquake Impact

Just 12 minutes later, the region was rattled by a 6.4 magnitude aftershock, compounding the destruction.

In Myanmar’s capital, Naypyitaw, the tremors cracked roads, shattered windows, and sent debris cascading from buildings. Hospitals declared mass casualty alerts as emergency responders rushed to aid the injured.

Meanwhile, in Bangkok, home to over 17 million residents, panic spread as alarms blared and people fled high-rises. Shocking video footage showed rooftop pools spilling over, while falling debris threatened pedestrians below.

Construction Site Collapses in Bangkok, Dozens Feared Trapped

The most devastating consequence of the Thailand earthquake was the collapse of a major construction site in Chatuchak Market, a bustling area in Bangkok. At least 43 workers remain unaccounted for, and rescue teams are racing against time to locate survivors.

The Bangkok police told the Associated Press they were on the scene, but the number of people inside at the time of the collapse remains unknown.

Authorities have urged evacuees to stay outdoors due to the risk of further tremors.

Thailand and Myanmar Authorities React to the Earthquake

Thailand’s Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra convened an emergency meeting to assess the impact of the quake and mobilize response teams. Officials have warned of possible aftershocks and urged residents to stay away from damaged structures.

In Myanmar, first responders are working to clear rubble and provide medical assistance, as authorities brace for the possibility of more tremors in the coming hours.

The Thailand earthquake is one of the strongest to hit the region in recent history, and officials fear significant casualties and economic losses.

Final Thoughts on the Thailand Earthquake

The full extent of the damage and casualties is still being assessed, but the 7.7 magnitude earthquake has already left a trail of devastation.

With rescue efforts underway and fears of further aftershocks, Thailand and Myanmar remain on high alert as the world watches the aftermath of this disaster unfold.
