Ramadan 2025

As Muslims across Nigeria prepare for the holy month of Ramadan, the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has called on faithful to look out for the crescent moon, which marks the beginning of the Islamic fasting period. The council, led by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, has also released contact details of officials across the country to verify and report credible moon sightings.

Importance of the Moon Sighting

The sighting of the new moon signifies the commencement of Ramadan, a sacred month in Islam during which Muslims fast from dawn to sunset, engage in prayers, and seek spiritual purification. The NSCIA emphasized that moon sighting committees across the country have been mobilized to ensure accurate verification in line with Islamic traditions.

In a statement, the Sultanate Council urged Muslims to actively observe the skies after sunset and report any confirmed sightings to the appropriate authorities. He further encouraged unity and patience, reminding believers of the spiritual significance of the holy month.

Bauchi and Kebbi Declare School Closures

As part of preparations for Ramadan, the governments of Bauchi and Kebbi States have announced the temporary closure of schools to allow students and teachers to fully participate in the religious observance. The move is intended to support Muslim families in observing fasting, prayers, and other religious activities without disruption.

Authorities in both states have assured that the academic calendar will be adjusted to accommodate the break, and students will not experience a significant setback in their studies.

Guidelines for Moon Sighting and Reporting

The NSCIA has provided guidelines for the proper reporting of moon sightings, urging witnesses to confirm the visibility of the crescent under clear conditions. The council also released official contact details for designated Islamic leaders and moon sighting committees nationwide.

Muslims are advised to follow the announcements from their respective state and local councils for updates on the moon sighting and the official start of Ramadan. Once the moon is confirmed, the Sultan of Sokoto is expected to make an official declaration, marking the beginning of the 30-day fasting period.

A Month of Worship and Reflection

Ramadan is a time of fasting, charity, and spiritual renewal for Muslims worldwide. Religious leaders have encouraged the faithful to maximize the opportunity for prayers, Quranic recitations, and acts of kindness throughout the month.

As the Muslim community awaits the sighting of the crescent moon, anticipation remains high for a blessed and peaceful Ramadan.
