Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has announced that he will reveal his preferred successor in January 2026, as political activities gear up ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Makinde made the declaration on Monday during the 11th Omituntun Ramadan lecture at the Government House Arcade in Ibadan. The lecture, titled “Benefits of Being a Good Neighbour: An Islamic Perspective,” was delivered by Yunus Teliat, the Grand Chief Imam of Ogbomoland.
Makinde Hints at Political Influence in 2027 Election
While addressing attendees in Yoruba, the governor expressed gratitude to Muslim leaders for their support and urged them to continue praying for his administration.
In a lighthearted remark, he addressed socialite Abbas Oloko, urging him not to remove his billboard at Isale Alfa, as it would soon display the image of his chosen successor.
“In January 2026, we know that political activities will start. I will tell you the picture of the person that will be installed there,” Makinde said.
Governor Reaffirms His Influence in PDP’s 2027 Gubernatorial Race
Makinde, who was re-elected in 2023 and is ineligible for another term, has previously stated that he will play a role in determining his successor, especially within the PDP.
In October 2024, while receiving a report on public service reforms, he reiterated his stance on shaping the next gubernatorial race:
“I may not have my way, it’s Oyo State people that will decide, but I’ll have a say, especially those in PDP will have me to contend with because I’m still the one controlling the structure.”
Call for Peaceful Coexistence During Ramadan
Beyond politics, Makinde used the Ramadan gathering to advocate for unity and peaceful coexistence among residents of Oyo State, regardless of religious differences.
As the 2027 elections draw closer, all eyes will be on Makinde’s political moves, particularly within the PDP, as he looks to influence the succession plan for Oyo State’s leadership.
