Rugby Africa

The President of Rugby Africa, Herbert Mensah, has highlighted significant strides in developing rugby across Africa following high-level discussions in the UK, South Africa, Uganda, and Côte d’Ivoire. His tour has resulted in strategic partnerships, financial commitments, and structural improvements aimed at strengthening African rugby.

Key Partnerships and Financial Support

Mensah’s tour began in the UK, where he engaged with World Rugby to discuss support for African rugby’s expansion. He then traveled to Cape Town, South Africa, to sign a major partnership extension with Agence Française de Développement (AFD).

This deal, involving South African Rugby and Rugby Africa, secures substantial funding for strengthening rugby structures across the continent.

Uganda’s Rugby Growth and World Cup Aspirations

In Uganda, Mensah met with key rugby stakeholders ahead of the Rugby World Cup qualifiers in July. The Ugandan government has pledged 3 billion shillings (about $800,000) to support rugby development, with additional funding being pursued.

Key discussions included:
Uganda’s potential inclusion in age-grade competitions
 Entry into the Challenger Series
A possible spot in the HSBC Sevens circuit

Mensah praised Uganda Rugby Union President Godwin Kayangwe for his leadership, stating:

“The progress in Uganda is commendable. Government support and strategic planning are setting the stage for a stronger future in African rugby.”

Côte d’Ivoire’s Rugby Renaissance

In Côte d’Ivoire, Mensah held talks with Minister for Sport, Adjé Silas Metch, focusing on revitalizing Ivorian rugby. Discussions centered on:
Government funding for rugby development
Expanding operations and infrastructure
Positioning Côte d’Ivoire as a contender for the 2027 Rugby World Cup

The government confirmed plans to host major rugby events in national stadiums and secure more investment through sports ministry channels. Mensah welcomed these efforts, emphasizing:

“The minister’s confidence in Ivorian rugby leadership and commitment to growth is a major boost for the sport in the region.”

West Africa Regional Rugby Association Launch

A key milestone in West African rugby will be the inauguration of the West Africa Regional Rugby Association, scheduled for tomorrow. Côte d’Ivoire’s Minister for Sport has confirmed his attendance, underscoring the importance of regional cooperation.

Mensah noted:

“Strengthening partnerships between West African rugby unions will drive the sport forward in alignment with the values of World Rugby and Rugby Africa.”

A Promising Future for African Rugby

With secured financial backing, strong government support, and strategic international partnerships, Rugby Africa is poised for major growth. Mensah emphasized the importance of further collaboration with the financial sector to solidify long-term success.

“The strides we are making today will define the future of African rugby.”
