The Ivorian Olympic Committee has recognized Herbert Mensah, President of Rugby Africa, with a special award for his outstanding leadership in developing and promoting rugby across the African continent.

The award was presented during a courtesy visit to the Olympic Committee headquarters in Abidjan, where Mensah was accompanied by rugby federation presidents from Togo, Benin, Mali, Ghana, Nigeria, Niger, and Côte d’Ivoire.

Recognition for Leadership and Regional Cooperation

The President of the Ivorian Olympic Committee, alongside his first and second vice presidents and treasurer, commended Mensah’s dedication to fostering growth and unity within African rugby.

“The presence of multiple West African rugby leaders underscores the collective commitment to advancing the sport in our region,” the committee stated.

Strengthening Olympic and Rugby Partnerships

In his acceptance speech, Herbert Mensah expressed gratitude for the support rugby has received from national Olympic committees, emphasizing their financial contributions ranging from $25,000 to $100,000 annually.

He called for stronger collaboration between Olympic committees and the rugby community to secure additional funding and elevate the sport’s standards across Africa.

Meeting with Côte d’Ivoire’s Minister of Sports

Earlier in the day, Mensah and his delegation met with Côte d’Ivoire’s Minister of Sports, Silas Adjé Metch, who reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting rugby development at both national and regional levels.

Launch of the West African Rugby Union

The visit to Abidjan coincided with the upcoming launch of a new West African Rugby Union, scheduled for Friday morning. This initiative marks a significant step in strengthening regional cooperation and expanding rugby’s presence across West Africa.

“This is a pivotal moment for African rugby, and I am honored to be part of this journey,” Mensah stated.

With continued government backing, Olympic support, and regional partnerships, the future of rugby in Africa looks brighter than ever.
