UFOAR

West African rugby has reached a historic turning point with the official inauguration of the Union of African Rugby Federations of West Africa (UFOAR) in Abidjan. This landmark event, held at the Ibis Hotel, brought together key stakeholders to establish a unified vision for the development of rugby in West Africa.

The inauguration was led by Marcellan Zahoui, former President of Rugby Africa, and Charles Yapo, former Treasurer General of Rugby Africa and a representative of World Rugby. Their presence underscored the significance of this initiative, which aims to strengthen the sport’s foundation and elevate West Africa’s status in global rugby.

UFOAR Rugby West Africa: A New Dawn for Regional Collaboration

The formation of UFOAR rugby West Africa signals a renewed commitment among rugby federations to unify efforts and enhance the sport’s presence across the region. Representatives from various West African nations gathered to discuss strategies for fostering the game’s growth and ensuring structured development programs.

Leading this transformation is Lukas Gnogbo Koré, the newly elected President of UFOAR and the current President of Rugby Côte d’Ivoire. In his address, he emphasized his vision to make Côte d’Ivoire the rugby capital of West Africa and to drive the sport’s expansion across the region. Côte d’Ivoire holds a unique legacy as the only French-speaking West African nation to have competed in a Rugby World Cup.

As rugby continues to gain traction in East, South, and North Africa, UFOAR aims to ensure West Africa’s stronger representation on the international stage.

Strengthening Rugby West Africa Through Unity and Investment

Herbert Mensah, President of Rugby Africa, hailed the creation of UFOAR as the beginning of a new era for West African rugby. He highlighted the importance of collaboration, stating:

“As sport is a big business, it is necessary for nations to come together, work with governments, raise funds, and create better opportunities for all.”

His remarks reflect the growing need for federations, governments, and private sector partners to unite in securing funding and resources for rugby’s development.

The initiative has also gained strong support from the Minister of Sports and Urban Life, who commended Rugby Africa’s leadership and assured continued government backing. His endorsement reinforces the commitment to sustaining rugby’s momentum and unlocking new investment opportunities.

With the establishment of UFOAR rugby West Africa, the region is poised for increased investment, enhanced player development, and greater international participation. This initiative will focus on:

  • Grassroots rugby programs to nurture young talent
  • Improved development pathways for players and coaches
  • Strategic partnerships to boost funding and sponsorship opportunities
  • Stronger representation in continental and global tournaments, including future Rugby World Cups

The launch of UFOAR represents a pivotal moment for West African rugby, setting the stage for sustainable growth and competitive success on the world stage. Stakeholders remain optimistic that this unified approach will translate into greater representation for West Africa in international rugby.

With solid backing from governing bodies and an ambitious roadmap in place, the future of UFOAR rugby West Africa looks brighter than ever
