IHF Trophy

Nigeria’s U-18 men’s handball team finished as runners-up at the IHF Trophy Intercontinental Phase, following a hard-fought 34-30 loss to Kosovo after overtime in the final match on Sunday in Pristina, Kosovo.

A Journey of Determination and Triumph

The Nigerian team, led by Coach Emeka Nnamani, embarked on their IHF Trophy journey with high hopes, having secured their spot in the Intercontinental Phase after winning the IHF Zone 3 Africa Championship in Ghana last year. They continued their dominance at the Continental Phase, emerging as champions in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, which earned them a ticket to compete against teams from other continents.

Heading into the Intercontinental tournament, Nigeria was viewed as one of the favorites, given their strong performance in previous rounds. The team showcased remarkable skill and resilience throughout the competition, battling some of the best U-18 teams from different parts of the world.

Nigeria’s Road to the Final

In the group stage, Nigeria faced tough competition, including a challenging match against Kosovo, where they suffered a narrow defeat. However, they bounced back with impressive victories against other teams, displaying their attacking prowess and defensive discipline.

One of Nigeria’s standout performances came in the semifinals, where they secured a convincing victory over Uzbekistan, earning them a place in the grand finale against the tournament hosts, Kosovo.

A Fierce Final Battle

Determined to avenge their earlier loss to Kosovo in the group stage, the young Nigerian players entered the final match with a winning mindset. The first half was an intense battle, as both teams struggled to break each other’s defense, leading to a 13-13 deadlock at halftime.

In the second half, Nigeria took control, surging ahead to a 26-24 lead with just three minutes left on the clock. Christian Foloki and Mustapha Mohammed, who had been outstanding throughout the tournament, combined for 13 crucial goals to give Nigeria the edge. However, Kosovo staged a late comeback, scoring two quick goals to force overtime.

With the home crowd roaring behind them, Kosovo capitalized on the momentum, dominating the extra period and securing a 34-30 victory to claim the championship title.

USA Secures Bronze, Nigeria’s Mohammed Wins Top Scorer Award

In the third-place match, the USA edged past Uzbekistan 36-34, securing the bronze medal.

Despite Nigeria’s loss in the final, Mustapha Mohammed emerged as the tournament’s top scorer, netting an impressive 43 goals. He finished ahead of Kosovo’s Amar Muqolli (30 goals) and Granit Kadiri (29 goals).

A Strong Legacy and Lessons for the Future

This marks Nigeria’s second final loss at the IHF Trophy Intercontinental Phase, the first being in 2019 against Chinese Taipei. They also finished third in the 2023 edition.

Though the team fell just short of the title, their incredible performance throughout the tournament highlights the growth of handball in Nigeria. With more international exposure and investment, Nigeria’s young talents are on track to become a dominant force in global handball.
