956 Nigerians Evacuated from Libya in Early 2025

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has successfully evacuated 956 Nigerians from Libya in the first quarter of 2025. This effort was made possible through collaboration with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) Nigeria and the National Commission For Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons (NCRMI).

Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Chairman/CEO of NiDCOM, confirmed the development, stating that the evacuees included 683 females, 132 males, 87 children, and 54 infants.

Breakdown of Nigerians Evacuated from Libya

The 956 Nigerians evacuated from Libya were repatriated in six separate operations between January and March 2025. According to NiDCOM’s statement, the evacuation figures for each trip were:

January 28 – 152 returnees
February 11 – 145 returnees
February 19 – 180 returnees
February 25 – 159 returnees
March 4 – 144 returnees
March 18 – 176 returnees

Over the years, more than 15,000 stranded Nigerians have been successfully brought back home through joint efforts by the Federal Government and the IOM.

Dabiri-Erewa Cautions Against Dangerous Migration Routes

While addressing the issue, Dabiri-Erewa reiterated the commission’s consistent warnings against irregular migration, particularly through Libya, a conflict-ridden country. She emphasized,

“Because of the delicate political situation in Libya, we countlessly caution Nigerians to avoid Libya as a pathway to Europe; not just Libya but other irregular routes.”

She further advised Nigerians to use legal migration channels, noting that despite rescue efforts, some individuals still return to Libya or attempt riskier routes to Europe.

Government’s Commitment to Nigerians in Diaspora

Hon. Dabiri-Erewa assured that the Federal Government remains committed to protecting the rights and dignity of Nigerians at home and abroad. She called for greater collaboration between government agencies, NGOs, the media, and stakeholders to raise awareness on the dangers of illegal migration.

The Nigerian government urges citizens to prioritize safe and legal migration methods while it continues to assist stranded Nigerians abroad.
