Professor Kingsley Ekwueme Performs First Robotic Surgery in West Africa

In a groundbreaking medical advancement, Professor Kingsley Ekwueme has successfully performed the first robotic surgery in West Africa on a prostate cancer patient. The procedure, which took place in Lagos, was carried out using the state-of-the-art Da Vinci Robot, a globally renowned system for minimally invasive surgeries.

Ekwueme, a renowned urological and robotic surgeon, recently launched The Prostate Clinic (TPC) Nigeria Centre for Robotic and Laparoscopic Surgery, the first specialized clinic in West Africa dedicated to advanced prostate cancer treatment.

How the First Robotic Surgery in West Africa Is Changing Cancer Treatment

The introduction of robotic-assisted surgery is a major breakthrough for Nigeria’s healthcare system. The Da Vinci Robot offers 3D imaging, seven degrees of motion freedom, and precise surgical control, making it a game-changer for complex procedures.

According to Ekwueme, this innovative technology brings numerous benefits, including:

  • Minimal blood loss compared to traditional open surgery.
  • Faster recovery time, reducing hospital stays.
  • Reduced pain and scarring, enhancing patient comfort.

“This is truly historic,” Ekwueme stated. “We are bringing technology that has never been seen before in this region, giving Nigerians access to world-class treatment right here at home.”

Expanding Robotic Surgery Beyond Prostate Cancer in West Africa

Beyond prostate cancer treatment, the first robotic surgery in West Africa marks the beginning of a new era for medical procedures. Ekwueme emphasized that the Da Vinci Robot will be used to treat various urological conditions in both men and women, including:

  • Kidney cancer
  • Bladder cancer
  • Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)
  • Kidney stones

Additionally, The Prostate Clinic is committed to making these procedures affordable for Nigerians. Ekwueme also stressed the importance of training local surgeons in robotic-assisted surgeries to ensure long-term sustainability.

The Future of Robotic Surgery in Nigeria

With the success of the first robotic surgery in West Africa, Ekwueme is already planning to introduce new medical technologies. One of his upcoming innovations includes a zero blood loss procedure for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

“Our mission is to ensure that no one in this country dies needlessly due to a lack of access to quality care,” he said. “We are working to make these procedures as cost-effective as possible.”

To tackle Nigeria’s electricity challenges, The Prostate Clinic operates on 24-hour solar power, ensuring uninterrupted medical services.

With a combination of cutting-edge technology, affordability, and local expertise, Nigeria is now on the path to becoming a leader in robotic surgery in Africa. This milestone provides hope for thousands of cancer patients and marks a new chapter in the country’s medical history.
