Zimbabwe Hold Nigeria to 1-1 Draw in World Cup Qualifier

The Super Eagles’ 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification hopes took a hit as Nigeria vs Zimbabwe ended in a 1-1 draw. A late goal from Zimbabwe denied the three-time African champions a much-needed victory at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium.

Coming off a 2-0 win over Rwanda, Nigeria aimed to build momentum but struggled to break down a resilient Zimbabwean defense. Despite Victor Osimhen’s second-half goal, the visitors struck late to snatch a point, leaving Nigeria’s path to the World Cup in jeopardy.

Osimhen Scores, but Zimbabwe Fight Back Late

From the first whistle, Nigeria vs Zimbabwe 1-1 draw was a tense affair, with the Super Eagles pressing forward. Nigeria dominated possession and created early chances, but poor finishing and solid Zimbabwean defending kept the score level at halftime.

In the 74th minute, Victor Osimhen broke the deadlock, expertly heading home a cross from Ola Aina, sending the home crowd into celebration. Wilfred Ndidi then had a golden opportunity to extend the lead, but his miss proved costly.

As the clock ticked down, Zimbabwe punished Nigeria’s defensive lapse. Tawanda Chirewa found space inside the box and slotted past Stanley Nwabali in the 90th minute, stunning the Super Eagles and their fans.

Nigeria’s World Cup Hopes in Danger After Draw

The Nigeria vs Zimbabwe 1-1 draw leaves the Super Eagles in a tough spot in Group C of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. With just six points from five matches, their chances of securing a place at the tournament are fading.

Zimbabwe, despite being bottom of the table with three points, showed resilience with this result, proving to be a tough challenge.

Nigeria must now regroup, refine their attacking efficiency, and tighten their defense if they hope to turn their World Cup qualification dreams into reality.
