Former Senator Oloriegbe to Lead National Health Insurance Authority

President Bola Tinubu has appointed Dr. Ibrahim Yahaya Oloriegbe as the Chairman of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA). The appointment, which takes effect from March 11, 2025, is for an initial four-year term.

The announcement was made in a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, on Sunday, March 30, 2025.

Who is Dr. Ibrahim Yahaya Oloriegbe?

Oloriegbe is a seasoned medical professional and a former lawmaker who represented the Kwara Central Senatorial District in the 9th Senate. During his tenure, he served as:

  • Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health (2019 – 2023)
  • Chairman of the Joint National Assembly Committee on Health

He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Medicine and Surgery from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and a Master’s in Coaching and Consultation from the University of Oxford, UK, and HEC, Paris.

Oloriegbe’s Experience in the Health Sector

As a medical practitioner, Oloriegbe is an active member of several professional organizations, including:

  • Nigerian Medical Association (NMA)
  • Association of General and Private Medical Practitioners of Nigeria (AGPMPN)
  • Nigeria Venereal Disease Association
  • Guild of Medical Directors of Nigeria
  • International AIDS Society (IAS)
  • Africa Health Leadership and Management Network

With his strong background in health policy and administration, Oloriegbe is expected to bring his expertise and leadership skills to the NHIA, ensuring improved healthcare financing and access to affordable health insurance for Nigerians.

Strengthening Nigeria’s Health Insurance System

The appointment of Oloriegbe comes at a critical time when Nigeria’s health sector faces challenges in ensuring universal health coverage. As NHIA Chairman, he will oversee the implementation of strategic policies aimed at:

  • Expanding health insurance coverage across Nigeria
