The 2025 BET Awards are fast approaching, and is set to take place on June 9 at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles and this year, West African music stars are dominating the international nominations once again.

With artists like Ayra Starr, Burna Boy, Rema, Tems, and Shallipopi earning major nods, and South Africa’s Tyla representing the continent with her own accolades, African music continues to shine on a global stage.

Ayra Starr Leads the Pack

Fast-rising Nigerian star Ayra Starr has emerged as the most nominated African artist this year. The 21-year-old has received three nominations in the following categories:

Best Female R&B/Pop Artist

Best New Artist

Best International Act

With her chart-topping singles and commanding stage presence, Ayra Starr continues to push the boundaries of Afrobeats and pop music on a global scale.

Burna Boy and Rema Secure Top Spots

The Afrobeats heavyweight Burna Boy adds another Best International Act nomination to his name, following four previous wins in the same category.

The Afrobeat singer who is known for his energetic performances and global appeal, remains a strong contender.

Joining him is Rema, whose genre-blending style and international chart success have earned him a nomination alongside Burna Boy in the same category.

Tyla Represents Southern Africa with Major Nod

Breakout South African star Tyla is nominated for Best New Artist, following her global hit “Water,” which topped charts in multiple countries and gained viral traction on TikTok.

Tyla continues to push Amapiano-infused pop into mainstream international spaces.

Shallipopi Makes Debut Appearance

Street-hop sensation Shallipopi has clinched a nomination for Best New International Act. As a breakout star in Nigeria’s music scene, his recognition at the BET Awards reflects the rising global attention on grassroots sounds from West Africa.

Tems Earns Double Recognition

Grammy-winning singer Tems is also on the 2025 nominee list. Her singles “Burning” and “Hold On” from her debut album _Born In The Wild_ earned her a nomination in the BET Her category, which celebrates empowering and impactful female artistry.

Kendrick Lamar Leads Overall Nominations

While West African talent dominates international categories, Kendrick Lamar leads the pack overall with 10 nominations, followed by artists like Doechii, Future, and GloRilla.
