Real Madrid announced on Thursday, May 22, 2025, that midfielder Luka Modric will leave the club after the Club World Cup in mid-June, marking the end of an extraordinary 13-year journey.

The 39-year-old Croatian, described as a “true legend” in the club’s statement, will play his final match at the Santiago Bernabeu against Real Sociedad on Saturday, May 24, 2025.

A Glorious Chapter Closes

Modric, who joined Madrid in 2012, has been a cornerstone  of the club’s most successful eras, winning 28 titles, including six European Cups, six Club World Cups, five European Super Cups, four Spanish leagues, two Copas del Rey, and five Spanish Super Cups.

In a heartfelt Instagram post, Modric reflected, “The time has come. The moment I never wanted to come but that’s football, and in life everything has a beginning and an end.”

He added, “Playing for Real Madrid changed my life as a football player and as a person. I am proud to have been part of one of the most successful eras of the best club in history. Although, after the Club World Cup, I will no longer wear this shirt on the pitch, I will always be a Madridista.”

Modric’s Legacy and Final Days

Modric’s role diminished in recent seasons under outgoing coach Carlo Ancelotti, with fewer minutes played, but his impact remains undeniable.

The 2018 Ballon d’Or winner and 2022 Marca award recipient transformed Madrid’s midfield with his vision, precision, and leadership.

The Club World Cup in the United States will be Modric’s final chapter with Real Madrid, where he’ll aim to add one last trophy.

A Legend’s Impact

Modric’s departure marks the end of an era for Real Madrid, where he became a symbol of excellence during a golden period.

His 28 titles and individual accolades, including breaking the Messi-Ronaldo Ballon d’Or dominance in 2018, cement his status as one of football’s all-time greats.

However, details of his future remain unclear, with no confirmed plans beyond the summer.
