Ghana

Dr. Matthew Opoku-Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, has confirmed that he was invited by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) to assist in investigations regarding his tenure as Minister of Education under the Nana Akufo-Addo administration.

The former cabinet minister and 2024 Vice Presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) disclosed that he has already honored the invitation, emphasizing his commitment to accountability as a responsible citizen.

In a recent interview, Dr. Opoku-Prempeh stated, “As for accountability, nobody can escape it.” He revealed that he willingly submitted himself to the NIB’s inquiries.

Details of NIB Engagements

Dr. Opoku-Prempeh, who served as running mate to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the 2024 general election, shared that he appeared before the NIB on two occasions.

While acknowledging that he could not recall every detail from his time in office, he cooperated fully with investigators, “I’ve forgotten some of the issues; I can’t remember everything that happened while I was in office.

That is why we have technocrats and others who assist in running the ministry and keep records. For the issues I clearly remember, I spoke to them during the invitation,” he explained.

He also noted that he spent an entire day at the NIB and may be required to return for further engagements.

Call for Transparency in Public Service

Dr. Opoku-Prempeh advised current political leaders to act transparently, given the transient nature of power.

“I always say that those of us in politics should know that no condition is permanent. Today, you can be in power; the next day, you could be in opposition.

So politicians in power should always be mindful of what they do with the authority entrusted to them, so that if they are asked to account for their stewardship tomorrow, they can easily do so,” he stated.

Broader Context of NIB Investigations

The NIB’s invitation to Dr. Opoku-Prempeh comes amid reports of intensified probes into the activities of key officials from the previous administration.

Other notable figures, including Professor Ameyaw Ekumfi and former National Service Authority Deputy Director of Operations Kwaku Ohene Gyan, have also been summoned for questioning.

While the NIB has not issued an official statement, sources suggest the investigations focus on administrative decisions and financial expenditures during the tenure of former government appointees.

As Ghana continues to navigate its political landscape, Dr. Opoku-Prempeh’s cooperation with the NIB underscores the importance of accountability and transparency in governance.
