Thomas-Partey

On Thursday, August 7, 2025, Villarreal CF announced the Thomas Partey signing, sparking heated debate.

The 32-year-old Ghanaian midfielder, a free agent since his Arsenal contract ended in June 2025, joins for the 2025-26 La Liga season.

However, the timing raises eyebrows, as just two days earlier, Partey was granted bail in England on five rape charges and one sexual assault charge.

This move coincides with Villarreal’s return to Champions League football after a fifth-place La Liga finish. Partey’s skills could strengthen the squad.

Yet, the serious allegations against him fuel controversy. Fans and analysts question the balance between sporting goals and ethical concerns in this high-profile transfer.

Addressing the Legal Allegations

Villarreal’s statement praised Partey as a “complete midfielder with great stamina.” But it quickly tackled his legal issues.

“Thomas firmly denies all allegations,” the club said.

“We uphold the presumption of innocence and await the judicial outcome.”

UK laws limit further comments on active cases. Still, Villarreal condemned all forms of violence, including gender-based violence, racism, and discrimination.

This stance hasn’t silenced critics. Some fans support the club’s legal approach. Others argue signing Partey sends the wrong message. The debate intensifies as the football world watches closely.

Charges and Legal Timeline Explained

On August 5, 2025, Partey appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London. He faces five rape charges involving two women and one sexual assault charge involving a third.

The alleged incidents occurred between April 2021 and June 2022 during his Arsenal tenure.

The investigation started in February 2022 after a rape report. Authorities charged Partey on July 4, 2025, post-Arsenal contract.

His next court date is September 2, 2025, at London’s Old Bailey. His lawyer, Jenny Wiltshire, insists he denies all charges.

Partey’s bail conditions, including notifying police of travel, allowed his Villarreal move after a medical on August 3, 2025.

Partey’s Career and Villarreal’s Goals

Thomas Partey brings vast experience to Villarreal. He played 167 matches for Arsenal, scoring nine goals, after a £45 million transfer from Atlético Madrid in 2020.

At Atlético, he made 188 appearances, winning La Liga, the UEFA Super Cup, and the Europa League. For Ghana, Partey has 51 caps, starring in the Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup.

Villarreal sees the Thomas Partey signing as key for their Champions League campaign. His ability to win balls and launch plays is a major asset.

Interestingly, Villarreal beat Arsenal 3-2 in a pre-season friendly on August 6, 2025, a day before the transfer. Reports suggest a two-year deal, with an optional second year.

Fan Reactions and Ethical Questions

The Thomas Partey signing has divided fans. Nearly 1,000 supporters signed a Villarreal Report petition, calling it “the darkest day” for the club.

They view it as disrespectful to sexual abuse victims. However, Borja Jiménez, from the “L’Os Groc” fan group, praised Partey’s experience for the Champions League.

This split reflects the tension between sports and ethics. As Partey joins training on August 8, 2025, his legal case and on-field performance will shape this controversial transfer’s legacy.
