A devastating tanker explosion in Kaduna State has left several people feared dead and others injured.

The incident occurred on Monday, August 11, 2025, around 8:30 a.m. near Rochas Foundation School, along the Kaduna–Kano expressway bypass between Kwangila and Dan Magaji, Zaria.

Collision Sparks Multiple Explosions

According to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication, the crash involved two fuel-laden tankers and two passenger-filled Golf cars.

The collision triggered five powerful explosions, followed by a massive fire that sent thick black smoke billowing across the highway.

Witnesses reported that all occupants of the cars died on the spot, except for one driver who survived but sustained severe burns.

Emergency Response Underway

Emergency services, including fire department personnel and security agencies, swiftly cordoned off the scene to manage the crisis.

Motorists and pedestrians have been advised to avoid the Kaduna–Kano expressway bypass as rescue and recovery operations continue.

Authorities have yet to confirm the exact number of casualties, but the scale of the tragedy has shaken the local community.

Nigeria’s Tanker Accident Crisis

This incident adds to Nigeria’s alarming history of fuel tanker accidents.

Data compiled between January 2009 and October 2024 reveals 169 fuel tanker crashes nationwide, resulting in 1,613 deaths.

The year 2019 was the deadliest, with 29 accidents and 203 fatalities, while 2009 and 2014 saw the fewest incidents, with three each.

Recent tragedies, including a tanker explosion in Jigawa State in October 2024 that killed over 150 people and another in Niger State claiming five lives, highlight the ongoing risks on Nigeria’s roads.

Call for Improved Road Safety

The Zaria explosion underscores the urgent need for stricter regulations and enhanced safety measures for fuel tankers on Nigeria’s highways.

As investigations continue, the focus remains on supporting victims and preventing future tragedies.
