President Bola Ahmed Tinubu leaves Nigeria today, Thursday, August 14, 2025, for Japan and Brazil.
His Special Adviser, Bayo Onanuga, announced the trip on Wednesday. Tinubu’s first stop is Yokohama, Japan, for the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) from August 20 to 22.
He will then visit Brasília, Brazil, from August 24 to 25 for a state visit.
Japan Visit Focuses on TICAD9
In Japan, Tinubu will attend TICAD9, themed “Co-create Innovative Solutions with Africa.” The conference, co-hosted by Japan, the UN, UNDP, African Union Commission, and the World Bank, promotes Africa’s economic transformation.
It emphasizes private investment and sustainable societies. Additionally, Tinubu will hold bilateral meetings and engage with Japanese company executives investing in Nigeria.
Brazil State Visit Strengthens Ties
In Brazil, Tinubu will meet President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva for a two-day state visit. They will hold bilateral talks and sign cooperation agreements.
Tinubu will attend a business forum with Brazilian investors, joined by key Nigerian ministers. The visit aims to explore new trade and investment opportunities between Nigeria and Brazil.
Context of TICAD and Bilateral Engagements
TICAD, launched in 1993, occurs every three years, alternating between Japan and Africa. The last event was in Tunisia in 2022.
Nigeria’s participation aligns with domestic initiatives like reviving the steel industry and circular economy efforts. The Brazil visit builds on Nigeria’s push for global partnerships, as seen in recent aviation and education reforms.
Expected Outcomes and Impact
Tinubu’s trip highlights Nigeria’s focus on economic diversification and global cooperation. His engagements aim to attract investment and enhance trade.
Success in these talks could position Nigeria as a regional economic hub, supporting job creation and infrastructure growth, as emphasized in recent government policies.
